Well, the day lived up to our expectations of a hard day. It
was long……88 miles and included 5,800 feet of climbing. The climbs were not
long pass climbs, just MANY rolling hills with steep hills. You could not speed
up into them and try to power your way part way up the hill. Today was the most
deceptive look ahead at the road that I have ever experienced. You would look
ahead and swear you should be coasting downhill, but when you stopped pedaling
to enjoy the coast, you nearly came to a stop, or were pedaling hard and only
going 9-11 mph. I think we were going through the “Mystery Spot”. But the
scenery was just gorgeous. There were again many sings along the road warning
of elk crossing, but being in the middle of the day, we did not see any. There
were many trucks and pickups from the oil industry in the area on the first
half of the day. The hills are filled with wells and natural gas wells.
There were some that needed a lift for the end of the route
today. The last riders to finish came in at about 5:00 pm. Adam and I came in
at just after 3:00 pm. We both were struggling today and took a very
conservative pace to make sure we could finish the day…..which at times was
very questionable in our minds. But we stuck to it and got it done! The SAGS
were great again today and spaced every 15 miles and one extra at the end to
help us complete our day.
