Today is very special, as we will be in 3 different states today. We start in IL and go a couple miles and then are in IN, and then later into Michigan!
Our route used suburban streets and a good portion of great bike paths south of the Gary, Hammond, Hobart IN areas. The last portion was on the Prairie Dunes Trail. We angled up to the Lake Michigan shoreline and had a great view at our 2nd SAG stop. The water color was beautiful and it made me really appreciate the beautiful area we live in. We rode along the lake shore for quite a lot. There are some beautiful homes all the way through IN and MI. It makes you think of the sharp contrast in economic conditions in our country......so much wealth on one end and so much poverty on the other. Most of us do not like to be labeled as such, but we really are pretty wealthy compared to the majority of the world's population.
As Dan, Herb and I were riding north of New Buffalo, MI, we spotted a Swedish bakery, Harbert's, along US12. Harry and Henni Drost were just leaving and had told our tour's story to them. The manager bought us our beverage and we had a pastry from there vast counter and it was delicious. Later, the waitress came by and said the manager was making us some Swedish pancakes to try. She brought them out with a berry sauce and they were great! What a welcome surprise. Thanks! I'll bet Jack and Sue Anderson know about this jewel!
Our camp for the night was at an inner city church that is a recent joint RCA and CRC outreach. Some camped on the lawn and some put their mattresses throughout the building. We had our peleton meeting in the sanctuary and there was a short praise time.
Again, there is such a sharp contrast in the inter city area and the nearby Harbor Shores Golf Club, a $500 million Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. Hopefully that investment gets some jobs back into the community.
It was a beautiful day and evening, with very comfortable temps.
We were surprised by our friends Vern and Diane in Benton Harbor. They showed up unexpectedly and took us out to dinner. What a great treat and we were so glad to see familiar faces!
